Need to hone your study habits? Improve your focus? Manage your time better? The Student Success Center can help you acquire and improve these important skills for success at New College.
Located in Jane Bancroft Cook Library Room 103, the Student Success Center offers one-on-one appointments with trained peer coaches, group study sessions, recurring appointments, workshops, printable resources, and referrals to other campus services.
During a coaching session, you’ll sit down and talk to your coach about your goals for the upcoming week or semester, discuss various challenges you might be facing, help determine the next steps, and discuss different tools and strategies you can implement. Coaching is for everyone; we can all use support and we all have areas that need growth. Transitioning from high school to college is the perfect opportunity to work on these skills!

Coaching FAQ
Learn more about the coaching services offered at the Student Success Center.
One-on-one peer coaching that provides opportunity and support to strengthen core academic and life skills. Coaching is conversational, individualized and judgment-free, and it offers students additional accountability in a supportive environment. Students use coaching to improve a skillset, develop new habits, plan their weeks, and as an added layer of accountability.
It is best not to make an appointment with a coach you already know (to avoid personal conflicts outside of the SSC, and so you can be as productive as possible in your meeting). Some students prefer to meet with coaches who share the same field of study, as they may have a better understanding of certain terminology, professors, assignments and topics. When you make an appointment using the online scheduler you can read short bios about each of the Student Success Coaches.
There are no requirements for how often you must meet with a coach. When making your appointment, you can choose to set up recurring appointments if you wish (and you can always cancel if necessary). Most students prefer to have weekly recurring appointments so that they can work gradually on topics over time and ensure success throughout the semester. We don’t offer quick fixes at the SSC, but we strongly believe that small changes over time can make a big difference.
Coaches work with students on a variety of topics, including time management, study skills, test-taking, organization, stress management, focus/attention management, note-taking, faculty relationships, project management, presentation skills, goal setting, prioritization and reading comprehension.
Yes! Coaches do not give out personal information about you or the content discussed in your meetings.
Keep an eye out for an email from the SSC toward the end of the spring semester when we are looking to hire new coaches. You will need to fill out the application with a resume and recommendations, and then you will be selected to schedule an interview.
